How Many Chemicals? What? – A Natural Shaving Cream Alternative

IMG_20160711_171238

After looking at the ingredients on a standard shaving cream bottle, it made me wonder why we put all these chemicals on our skin that leach into our body just to shave??

Palmitic acid, triethanolamine, isopentane, glyceryl oleate, stearic acid, isobutane, sorbitol, fragrance, hydroxyethylcellulose, peg-90m, ptfe, pefg-23m, propylene glycol, glyceryl acrylate copolymer, pvm/ma copolymer, green 3, blue 1

What? Really? I’m going to put all that on my body just to shave…

I did some research and development, and lo and behold nature has already provided us with a perfectly good shaving cream. It is called olive oil (coconut oil works as well) – nourishing and moisturizing to the skin, natural and not jam-packed with dozens of unnecessary chemicals.

You’ll need a new razor if possible because the olive oil tends to gum up the razor but it does work great. And now…not a chance I would ever use the factory chemical shaving cream ever again. Done, bye bye

Tea Tree for Travel

IMG_20160711_170034

The versatility of tea tree oil makes it a great travel companion. It can be used in so many situations and is like an all in one first aid kit.

Tea tree oil is anti bacterial and antiseptic making it a perfect substance to have on hand for cleaning small cuts and wounds. A possible life-saver especially if you are an off-the-beaten path style traveller. Hospitals or even basic medical care or clean water are quite often, out of reach luxuries in many travel locations.

Finding a clean washroom while traveling can also often be a challenge. Tea tree oil can be used to disinfect surfaces or clean your hands in almost any situation.

I always travel with a small bottle of tea tree oil…so many possible uses and so much better than packing a bunch of chemicals.

Food Allergies

I can’t believe how much better I am feeling since having a food allergy test done. I can now cut out the little things like Brazil nuts which are inherently healthy but react with my system. I was eating those by the bag full recently because of their mineral value, not knowing I was allergic to them.

Economically speaking, having food allergy tests provided for free to everyone seems like such a logical step. With more and more crap in our food these days, allergies are becoming much more prevalent.

Does it not seem like a smart move for countries to pay $300 or $400 a person to have this test done. A handful of foods might be responsible for causing someone’s hives, diabetes, headaches etc etc. Things that over a lifetime are going to cost so much more than $300 to treat, let alone the suffering and time off work for the individual.

The Health Benefits of Kiwi Fruit

IMG_20160425_191512

Everyone tends to think of oranges as the best source of vitamin C, but a single kiwi fruit packs twice the vitamin C as an average orange.

In addition to their vitamin C, kiwis contain a rare, fat free form of vitamin E. They are also rich in vitamin A, K, B, copper, folate, magnesium and fiber. Kiwis are also high in potassium, with two average sized kiwi fruits providing as much potassium as a banana.

For those of us who need some help waking up in the morning, kiwis are high in serotonin, which promotes alertness. Serotonin also boosts learning, memory, and mood, therefore setting you up for success throughout the day!

The Health Benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oil

IMG_20160416_193433

Lemongrass has a great scent and is used in a lot of beautiful cooking around the world. It also has many healing properties when used as an essential oil.

Perhaps the most interesting property of lemongrass is that it is a sedative of the central nervous system. This makes it particularily great for dealing with headaches, nervous exhaustion and stress related conditions.

Lemongrass is also thought to be beneficial for the immune system and may aid the body fight infectious disease and fevers. It is also believed to aid muscular pain, poor circulation and poor muscle tone. As well, lemongrass is an antidepressant, antiseptic and overall body tonic. What a great package of benefits!

Certain individuals may experience irritation and/or sensitization to this oil. Try a small patch test before using more extensively.

What is Fibromyalgia and How My Fibromyalgia Natural Treatment Worked!

Fibromyalgia Diagnosis

I felt seriously awful for a few years! Unexplained muscle pain, fatigue, depression, just a general sense of not being well. Doctors could not figure it out even with a battery of tests and all sorts of blood work

It took a while, but I was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia. (Fibromyalgia Wikipedia page) Where to go from here? My doctor let me know that there were medications available, but from his experience, a lot of people got better by simply altering their eating habits and lifestyle.

Food Allergies

I had a sneaking suspicion that my Fibromyalgia was strongly linked to what I was eating. My fibromyalgia natural treatment started by cutting known allergens from my diet such as wheat, gluten, caffeine, dairy, potatoes, and corn.

It didn’t happen overnight, but I slowly began feeling better with my new diet. I later had a food allergy test done which confirmed most of my suspicions and allowed me to further tweak the foods I was eating. I now had some positive results, but wanted to go even further with my fibromyalgia natural treatment.

Exercise

My doctor also wanted to make sure that I was exercising regularly. It didn’t matter what I was doing and it didn’t need to be very intense, it just had to be daily or almost daily. To get the body into a healthy routine and use it every day as it was designed. Exercise was going to be the second part of my fibromyalgia natural treatment.

Sleep

The next step in my fibromyalgia natural treatment was to deal with sleep. Fibromyalgia is definitely related to fatigue and if you are not sleeping properly you will not get better. I had already eliminated caffeine as a possible allergen and this also helped me fall asleep easier at night.

Fibromyalgia Natural Treatment Without Drugs

Pharmaceutical companies will want you to believe that you need medicine to get better. This is not true, at least not in my case. I took no drugs…

fibromyalgia natural treatment

I believe fibromyalgia was a wake up sign being sent by my body. Some major changes were in order if I wanted to feel good again. It seems too simple to work, but it did and I am living proof. Sure I still have some bad days and my lifestyle/food changes will probably have to be for the rest of my life, but I feel so much better after having implemented these changes:

Four Step Fibromyalgia Natural Treatment

  1. Cut out all primary known food allergens (wheat, gluten, dairy, corn, caffeine, potatoes) – these generally do nothing positive for your body anyways and I found my biggest gains with this step
  2. Get a food allergy test done and cut everything else that you have an intolerance for. Yes I know what are you going to eat? I eat vegetables, fruits, meat, fish and seeds
  3. Exercise daily – it does not need to be intense, just enough to get your body moving for at least 15 minutes
  4. Go to bed earlier, cut out caffeine and make sure getting a good night sleep is a priority

There are a few further steps to really tighten up your new fibromyalgia natural treatment, but I will save these for a further post after you have mastered the first four!
