Probiotics for Travel

IMG_20160711_164902

Taking probiotics for healthy stomach bacteria is a great way to enhance your overall health.

This is even more important when you are travelling and being exposed to all sorts of new foods and unknown bacteria.

I often experience stomach issues when travelling to a new country and decided to try probiotics before and during a recent trip.

I was pleasantly surprised when I experienced no gastrointestinal problems during the entire trip even though I was indulging in plenty of local street food and drink.

I always have some pepto handy just in case, but the probiotics definitely seem to help by introducing some healthy bacteria into the gut.

The #realreason to buy organic bananas

IMG_20160506_191826

There is certainly truth in the idea that one would rather not consume pesticides when eating food, but hey at least bananas have a thick skin. It must be better for you than eating say strawberries or grapes. This might be one of the few foods where organic doesn’t matter much.

But hold on! The real reason to buy organic bananas is for the workers. Trabajadores in countries like Dominican Republic and Guatemala have to deal with a chemical barrage every day they work with the bananas. Workers on organic farmers are free from that daily assault on their bodies.

That is why I buy organic bananas

The Health Benefits of Kiwi Fruit

IMG_20160425_191512

Everyone tends to think of oranges as the best source of vitamin C, but a single kiwi fruit packs twice the vitamin C as an average orange.

In addition to their vitamin C, kiwis contain a rare, fat free form of vitamin E. They are also rich in vitamin A, K, B, copper, folate, magnesium and fiber. Kiwis are also high in potassium, with two average sized kiwi fruits providing as much potassium as a banana.

For those of us who need some help waking up in the morning, kiwis are high in serotonin, which promotes alertness. Serotonin also boosts learning, memory, and mood, therefore setting you up for success throughout the day!

The Health Benefits of Quinoa

IMG_20160425_104210

Pronounced as KEEN-wah, quinoa truly is a ‘superfood’. They are edible seeds originally from South America that are naturally gluten-free and often grown organically.

Quinoa is considered a complete protein and contains all nine essential amino acids. Quinoa also contains manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, folate, copper, iron, zinc, and potassium. There are also thousands of other trace nutrients in quinoa including the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol.

As a bonus, quinoa is also easy to cook. Rinse your quinoa before cooking and use a 2 to 1 ratio water to quinoa. Bring to boil, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

Enjoy this amazing superfood packed with nutrients!!

Great Magnesium Food Sources

photo(15)One of the most important minerals for the healthy functioning of the body is magnesium. Among a host of benefits, magnesium helps in muscle and nerve function, regulates blood sugar, generates energy, relaxes blood vessels, aids in detoxifying the body and optimizes the function of the mitochondria. There is a growing body of evidence pointing to the belief that many, if not most or all health problems can be traced back to the dysfunction of the mitochondria.

Magnesium deficiency can manifest itself in migraine headaches, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, and cardiovascular disease.

The good news is that there are many magnesium rich foods that you can add to your diet. Dark green, leafy vegetables are generally the most abundant sources of magnesium, but there are other choices.

Magnesium food sources:

Spinach, broccoli, kale, swiss chard, brussel sprouts, bok choy
Cacao
Avocados
Nuts and seeds such as cashews, brazil nuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds
Mackerel and wild salmon
Squash
Papaya, strawberries, tomato, watermelon, raspberries

Why You Should Invest in Organic Wine

photo(9)I am surprised that organic wine hasn’t become more popular. After all, grapes are one of the worst offenders for pesticide use and it seems safe to assume that a lot of those pesticides are going to end up in your wine glass. Foods such as bananas and avocados have a protective layer, which would somewhat shield your pesticide intake. Not so with the soft skin on grapes.

If there is one industry which I believe should move swiftly into all organic production, it would be the wine industry. A toast to a glass not full of pesticides and chemicals!

David Suzuki compares the difference between organic and conventional wines. Why would you not buy organic?
